Exciting news, Eastbourne Natural History and Archaeology Society have with publishers ArchaeoPress produced a new book about Eastbourne Roman villa. Edited by Helen Warren, and with new contributions by David Rudling, specialist in Roman Sussex, this book brings together all the evidence and recent research concerning Eastbourne’s lost Roman villa. Included is the original ENHAS booklet compiled by Lawrence Stevens and Richard Gilbert in 1973, while in addition there are new coloured images, an illustration of what the villa may have looked like, recent Roman finds in the local area plus David Rudling’s extensive research on dating and other evidence. As a result of David’s investigations, we now know that the villa was far bigger and grander than previously assumed, more of a palace than a villa. We also have dates for its construction and demise. Helen Warren’s painting, an artist’s impression, gives an idea of what it may have looked like with its many rooms, pleasure gardens and sea views. The book which is £10.00 to ENHAS members and £12.00 to non-members is now available to purchase. It will be on sale at all our meetings or can be purchased by contacting Helen Warren at enhas.info@gmail.com.
